Coyle, Jack - Model 278 "Midge", 6'6"4wt, 2/3 Bamboo Fly Rod

For sale here is a 6'6" 2-piece / 3-tip "Midge" bamboo rod made by Jack Coyle, in excellent used condition. Based on the PHY Midge taper, this is a solid build 4wt with 2 standard tips and one slightly lighter tip marked ".056" (56 thousands of an inch at the tip). All sections are full length and straight. Nicely flamed cane with oxidized snake guides wrapped in transparent caramel silk with dark brown accents. Clear agate stripping guide and each tip top is wrapped differently for ease of rotation. 12/64 micro-swiss ferrules fit perfectly, and the female is fitted with a turned buffalo horn ferrule plug. 5.5" ventilated grip is smooth and shows only slight handling marks. Buffalo horn seat check and blued cap & ring reel seat over fine mahogany spacer. An excellent 4wt, the rod flexes nicely into the ventilated grip, and the difference between the standard and .056 tip is subtle. The finish is impeccable and the rod has seen very little use. Sold with original bag and brass capped tube with data decal. The tube is packaged in a heavy canvas protector with leather drawstring.

Jack is perhaps best known for his incredible restoration work, though he is a fantastic rod maker in his own right. A true craftsman, his rods are cherished by those who have received them. They have not been made available for direct sale...until now! We are fortunate to be offering two of his rods on the site currently, the other can be seen here.
