For sale here is a Paul Young 'Martha Marie", 7'6" 2/2 5wt bamboo rod in excellent original condition. Serial #4668, made in 1975 towards the end of Bob Summers' tenure at the Paul H. Young Rod Company. Flamed cane, dark guides and transparent brown windings. All sections straight, full length & serialized. 14/64 ferrules fit perfectly. Hand rubbed finish is in excellent shape, and the protective varnish over the butt script has a few small areas of orange peel texture. The varnish in this area seems stable, but you can feel and see the textured areas. The script includes the original owner's name and the date March 1975, all in Summers' handwriting. 6" cork grip with down-locking aluminum reel seat over cork spacer. All the cork is clean and smooth, and the reel seat finish is nearly perfect with intact PHY roll stamp. Minor mounting marks are the only sign of use I see, this rod has seen very little action. Scripted weight is 3 3/4oz, and my scale reads just a hair over that. Medium fast action, I think it's best with a WF5. Semi-parabolic character which shines through at the 35'+ mark. A scarce and desirable Paul Young taper, and this is a superb example from the Bob Summers-era. Sold in the original bag and Champion tube. The bag has a split on the piping side about 10" down from the top, and the bottom of the bag has been reinforced.
