Vom Hofe, Edward - Model 504 Tobique 4/0 Fly Reel - Char-Lem Modified

For sale here is an Edward vom Hofe model 504 Tobique, 4/0 salmon reel with a scarce Char-Lem drag modification. Charles Schrall started out modifying EvH and Zwarg reels with his improved drag design in the 1950's and they rarely surface. This reel is an original EvH frame, spool & faceplate (engraved with the initials "H.M.", serpentine handle and dual rolling pillars. The aluminum foot is filed on both ends and sports the original serial number and model info (Z418, model 504 and size 4/0), as well as Schrall's series number (#27). The hard rubber is a bit sun faded, but no cracks or issues. There is some minor line burn from being fished "rings up". The Schrall modification is a Bakelite back plate with adjustable drag knob. The revised drag design offers excellent resistance; many consider this modification an improvement over the original drag. Weight is 15.84oz, and this reel is a 2:1 multiplier. Very nice condition overall, the Bakelite and hard rubber have some small scratches, and the nickel silver parts have appropriate patina. Mechanically faultless, ready to fish or collect. Sold in an aftermarket neoprene pouch.
