For sale here is an H.L. Leonard Model 38-3 Catskill Special, 7' 2/2 3wt bamboo rod. Mint condition, this rod has been lawn cast but retains the plastic on the grip. Beautifully flamed bamboo with dark snake guides and full circle stripper, wrapped in transparent windings. Blued ferrules fit perfectly and the female is fitted with a ferrule plug. All sections are full length, straight & serialized (#8423). The cork is perfect under plastic, and the rod is fitted with a blued cap & ring reel seat over walnut spacer. A lithe 3wt dry fly rod, but not willowy. This rod was sold as part of Larry Foster's personal collection of fine Leonard rods. Foster was the president of the H.L. Leonard Rod Co. shortly before it folded in the mid 1980's. His typewritten notes on this rod are below, a copy of which will be included in the sale. Foster's notes: "This was the first Catskill Special built and differs from the current models in that the guides are not tipped in red. has never been fished only lawn cast. The Catskill Special series is a flamed (dark) cane version of the famous Catskill series. These dark rods are somewhat quicker and more of a true dry fly action."
