Sold Out $1.00
For sale here is an 8' 3/2 4wt Hawes bamboo rod, made for Abercrombie & Fitch, NY. The rod has been restored with the restoration attributed to George Guba. Medium colored cane with reverse-twist guide wrapped in red windings. The sections are straight & full length and repair-free. 14/64 & 11/64 ferrules fit nicely, and the agate tip tops both have hairline cracks in them. 4.5" cork grip is light soiled and lightly ridged. Nickel silver slide band reel seat is serialized (A131), and faint stamping reads "Hawes & Co. Makers - Abercrombie & Fitch Co. - Sole Agents - New York". Weight is 3.77oz. A fully working 8-footer with medium-slow action, representative of the era. Best with a DT4 but some may prefer to speed it up with a DT or WF3. Hiram Hawes learned the craft of split cane rods from his uncle Hiram L. Leonard and helped develop the original Leonard beveler. He is an integral part of the story of early rodmaking in the United States and Hawes rods seldom come up for sale. This one is sold in what appears to be the original bag (with a piece of cloth tape to secure the base) and a Peerless tube with a data label in Guba's handwriting.
