Carlson, Sam - Thomas Four, 8' 2/2 5wt Quad Bamboo Rod

For sale here is a scarce C.W. "Sam" Carlson 8' 2/2 5wt Thomas "Four" quad bamboo rod in excellent used condition. Serial #733, made in 1973. The taper codes are marked on the butt section between the hook keeper wraps. Marked "Thomas Four" and "Made by 'Sam' Carlson" on the butt, the script remains clear and bold through the darkly flamed cane. The rod is made with dark snake guides and dark Mildrum stripper, wrapped in dark ruby wraps with black accents. All sections are straight, full length & serialized. 15/64 ferrules fit perfectly. Squared bakelite winding check leads into a 6" cork grip (soiled & smooth), and up-locking aluminum screw lock reel seat over dark wood spacer. The butt cap is also bakelite. A smooth 5wt with medium-fast action, the weight is 5.20oz. "Sam" Carlson represented an important link from two legacy rod making houses, Edwards & F.E. Thomas. Shortly after purchasing the F.E. Thomas shop in 1958 he began making the "Thomas-Carlson" marked rods before moving to "Thomas Four" and finally "Carlson Four". Carlson's total production was somewhat limited, and his rods remain quite desirable. This one is packed in the original bag and brass capped tube. From the collection of Thomas H. Clark.
