Sold Out
For sale here is a 9' 3-piece / 3-tip Buddy Powell semi-hollow bamboo rod. 2 original tips and one replacement, all three of which are slightly different length (maximum difference is about 1/3"). Both original tips are scarfed under the first snake guide down from the tip top and have extended wraps covering the scarfs. On one of the original tips, the first snake guide down is offset by almost 90 degrees (wrapped to the wrong flat). The wraps on the butt and mid appear to be original and display white & black tipping throughout, indicating a semi-hollow Buddy Powell rod. The rod has gold intermediates, and the semi-hollow patent number is inked on the butt. 6.2" cork grip is soiled and ridged with one small chip at the recessed hood. Black Bakelite reel seat with the early-style E.C. Powell reel seat (thicker shelf at the end of the butt). The rod has bright snake guides and a small diameter red agate stripper. The moisture plug at the mid male ferrule has a replaced/resoldered. Ferrule fits are good except one of the original tip ferrules isn't very tight. I suspect a heavy application of quality ferrule wax will shore it up enough to fish. Weight is 4.80oz with the original tips, and 4.83oz with the replacement tip. This rod was previously sold as a dry fly accuracy rod, and while I can't confirm this with certainty, the character of the rod is that of a strong, progressive taper with fine tips. I prefer it with a modern WF5, although it will handle a DT5 and some may prefer it with a 6wt line, especially for shorter casts. Buddy Powell rods are rare, and this is an interesting (albeit flawed) example. Sold in the original olive twill bag and brass capped tube.
