For sale here is a San Francisco Thompson Model 500 fly reel with spare spool in excellent used condition. Black finish shows minor signs of use, mostly limited to the rims and light marks around the handle grasp. The central boss screw has an ~0.5" line of incomplete anodization, not uncommon on these reels. 3 3/8" diameter with a spool width of 1 1/8", a nice size for steelhead and light salmon. Smooth brass foot, metal line guard and the black composite handle spins freely. The genius in the Thompson reel design is the dual-brake mechanism. One brake incorporates a classic click pawl with adjustable presser bar, and the other has a brake shoe that bears on the spindle directly. Both are connected to independent tensioners, allowing for precision drag tuning. Mechanically tight with perfect fitment of both spools. The extra spool packs into a shearling lined Abercrombie & Fitch suede case and the reel packs into a block leather Homa case with the original Thompson reel paper.
