Powell, E.C. - 8'6" 2/2 Bamboo Rod - Owned By Doug Merrick

For sale here is a very special 8'6" 2/2 4/5wt, semi-hollow E.C. Powell rod, originally owned by Doug Merrick. As the winner of a casting event at the GGACC in 1947, Merrick was allowed to pick any rod on the rack in the Powell shop; this is that rod. Excellent condition, and all original except for a re-wrapped stripping guide. The cane is medium tempered with "two up" node spacing, oxidized snake guides and red agate stripping guide. The wraps are dark gold with intermediates of the same color. All sections are straight & full length, and the ferrule fit is perfect. Patent date script on the butt, above the black & white wraps indicating semi-hollow construction. 6.25" grip is slightly soiled with just a hint of ridging. The rod is fitted with the standard up-locking Powell reel seat with interrupted threads & maker's stamp. Weight is 4oz on the nose. Per Brandin, author of the E.C. Powell book, has owned this rod for many years and says it's his favorite Powell. This exact rod is mentioned in chapter 6 of Schwiebert's "Trout - Volume II", where he calls it "equaling any in the world". A beautiful casting B9 taper, and knowing the history makes it so much sweeter. Sold in the original bag and what is most likely a replacement Powell tube. A letter of provenance will be included with the sale. From the collection of Per G. Brandin.
