Hawes, H.W. - 8' 3/2 3wt Bamboo Rod (pending)

For sale here is a spectacular 8' 3-piece / 2-tip H.W. Hawes bamboo rod in excellent condition. This rod appears to be all original and free of repairs, except the butt ferrule has been rewrapped. 3x3 nodes, reverse-twist snake guides throughout. Crimson silk windings with full intermediate wraps. All sections are full length and remarkably straight. Ferrules are 8/64 & 12/64. The tip/mid ferrules have the faintest of metal-to-metal clicks, and one is more noticeable than the other. I would consider this very minor and it shores up nicely with a bit of pure paraffin wax. Strap & ring hook keeper with nickel silver winding check, tapered 4.3" cork grip (soiled but smooth), and cap & ring reel seat over varnished wood spacer. The butt cap reads "H.W. Hawes & Co. - Makers - Canterbury, Conn.". The cork has a few small areas where the snake guides have interrupted the soiling, probably while being transported in the tube. Weight is a lithe 2.40oz. Slow, delicate action. It casts nicely with a long belly WF3, but I also like it with a WF2. A sublime light-line rod from the early 1900's. This appears to be a "Featherweight" model, although my Hawes catalogs only show these rods being made up to 7'9". This rod measures 8' on the nose and was probably a custom order. Original Hiram Hawes Featherweights are rarely seen, and it's not uncommon to find them with short sections due to their delicate nature. The cane on this rod is intact and in fantastic shape making this a truly spectacular find. To complete the package, the rod comes in the original black silk bag and Landman aluminum tube with the Hawes stamp bold and clear below the collar. Don't sleep on this one, you're unlikely to see another!
