For sale here is a breathtaking Payne 96, 6'6" 2-piece / 2-tip bamboo rod. Mint original condition with the paper still on the grip. Medium toned cane, dark guides, chestnut brown windings with gold tipping. Strap & ring hook keeper, lithe 5" grip and cap & ring reel seat over Spanish Cedar spacer. The butt cap retains the Payne roll stamp and "Sold by Abercrombie & Fitch - New York" on the reverse. The reel seat hardware and ferrules retain their original dark bluing. The original grip paper is in excellent condition with bands of 1/8" tape holding it in place. The paper has "6 1/2 - #96" written in ink, along with 4 hash marks above in pencil. A blue & white label with a "2" is affixed below the writing. Weight is 2.65oz. There is one consideration for the next owner: The female ferrule is fitted with the original cork & aluminum ferrule plug. The cork has worked its way out beyond the welt by ~1/16" and is seized in place. I've gingerly attempted to remove it, but I don't dare force it out as I believe the cork will break/crumble whenever it is removed. I strongly suspect the ferrule plug has never been removed from this rod since it was delivered. I therefore have not assembled this rod, and the decision to leave it alone or pull it out will be one for the next custodian of this incredible rod. Museum quality Payne rods don't come along very often, especially in the desirable 96 taper. A worthy cornerstone of any collection. Sold in the original bag with perfect hangtag and brass capped tube with red A&F label affixed.
