For sale here is a rare 8'6" Leonard Hewitt Dry Fly rod in excellent restored condition. Far scarcer than the 8' Hewitt, this 8'6" 3/2 sports a progressive taper with fine dry fly tips and a nicely swelled butt. It casts a 5wt (DT or WF) with ease, action on the faster side of medium fast. Medium toned cane with full circle guides and agate stripping guide, wrapped in black & white jasper wraps with dark ginger tipping. All sections are straight and full length, and the ferrules fit perfectly. 6" cork grip appears original and remains clean and smooth. Cap & ring reel seat over mortised spacer. The butt cap has the Leonard stamp in cartouche and "Tournament" on the reverse. Weight is 4.85oz. Noted as an "H8 1/2" in the catalog, although the hang tag appears to read "50 1/2" Hew." A fine rod, sold in the original bag (w/ hang tag) and brass capped tube.
From the early Wm. Mills & Son catalogs: "For those who desire it we can supply the above rods [three-piece trout rods] made with quite stiff butt and middle and limber tip. These rods have slightly longer and larger diameter handles than regular".
