For sale here is an H.W. Hawes 9' 3/2 5wt bamboo rod in excellent restored condition. Made for Abercrombie & Fitch, the reel stamping on the reel seat is a bit faded, but you can still make out "H.W. Hawes & Co. Makers - Abercrombie & Fitch Co. - Sole Agents - New York". Darkly colored cane with reverse-twist guide wrapped in red windings. The sections are straight & full length and free of repairs. 10/64 & 16/64 ferrules fit nicely, although one tip ferrule is missing its moisture plug. One tip top is red agate, the other is steel. 5" grip is soiled & lightly ridged (a half-hearted cleaning was performed). Nickel silver slide band reel seat is serialized (A256). Weight is 4.99oz. Slow, full flexing action, representative of the era. A modern DT5 suits this rod well although I'm sure it will sing with a silk line. Hiram Hawes learned the craft of split cane rods from his uncle Hiram L. Leonard and helped develop the original Leonard beveler. He is an integral part of the story of early rodmaking in the United States and Hawes rods seldom come up for sale. This one packs into what looks like the original canvas bag and bamboo tip tube.
